Founded in 2019, Radu Vâlcu Quintet (RVQ) has rapidly become one of the most distinctive ensembles on Romania's contemporary jazz scene. Led by guitarist and composer Radu Vâlcu, the quintet draws on chamber music, jazz, classical music, and musical traditions from the Balkans and the Middle East, bringing these influences together through original compositions.
One of RVQ's defining features is its unique instrumentation, creating a sonic palette rarely heard in jazz. The ensemble combines classical guitar with an SFX-treated violin, vibraphone and electric vibraphone, piano layered with Moog synthesizer, and drums that anchor the sound. This unusual instrumentation allows the band to move seamlessly between the acoustic and the electronic, the intimate and the cinematic. Driven by a spirit of experimentation, the ensemble embraces extended techniques and unexpected sonic colors to create immersive musical landscapes.
Their performances have attracted sold-out audiences and invitations to major festivals, including the George Enescu Festival, JazzX, Jazz in the Park, 3Sound Fest, and Csiky Jazz. With a distinctive artistic voice and a reputation for captivating live performances, RVQ continues to push the boundaries of contemporary jazz.
